Playing in their second season in the strong Division one, this Colleges United team has once again proved that they are worthy of playing soccer at this high level. In order to play and survive at this standard of competition, the team was required to consistently produce first class performances, which were more often than not both physical and challenging for the players. Matches were closely contested, especially when the team was at full strength. This made great spectator value at the cost of speeding up the aging process for the parents, coaches and managers.
The team’s ability to ensure good ball retention, their support play and passing ability were all skills mastered by the players. The team’s success can be attributed to their defense comprising of Josh Lewis, Cameron Bandy, Levi Cathcart and Jarryd Collimore, as they were masters at frustrating the forwards of opposing teams. Midfielders Nathan Coates, Maclay Kenman and Caleb Robinson can be deemed as “the feisty trio” as well as the work horses of the team for their ability to challenge and close down their opposite numbers. Kyle Downing and Nelson Hurry provided quality passes to the forwards especially through their runs down the sideline and culminating with great aerial crosses. Owen Foster, the team’s Goal-Keeper, excelled in this position, as he certainly had his work cut out for him. A mid season hand injury to Owen certainly affected the team for a run of 4 games .Playing up front Mitchell Harrigan, David Hyatt and Scott Wiseman never gave up in their quest for goals, but for the width of the goalposts, and a little bit more luck here and there it could have been very different in several of the games.
The highlight of the season included achieving runners up medals at the Centenary Stormers Carnival as well as the win and draw against our local rivals, Ipswich Knights and the away win against Brisbane Olympic.
In summing up, the Colleges United U12 team served the club with distinction proving themselves as a team having both skill and ability, which was evident in their consistent performances on the field. Their “team spirit” is also to be commended, as was the sporting manner in which the players conducted themselves both on and off the field.
Congratulations on a great soccer season!
